The latest program launch highlights the importance of recognizing the signs of child abuse for parents, guardians and caregivers. Traditionally, the most frequent reporters of child abuse are the children’s school teachers. However, due to covid-19 and online learning, reporting has dropped dramatically, as many students are no longer seeing their teachers regularly.

To make up for this lack of reporting, the training program offered by Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center is designed to help understand the signs of child abuse, and how to prevent it and report it.

The Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse program focuses on understanding the complex dynamics of neglect and abuse. The program teaches attendees how to identify the signs and symptoms of abuse, as well as how to respond to concerns and disclosures of abuse with appropriate questions.

The training program also explains the legal implications of being a mandated reporter and delves into how a parent or guardian can improve youth resilience.

All training sessions are available online or in-person, depending on covid-19 restrictions. Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center offers most training courses in both Spanish and English.

The Recognizing Child Abuse Program is free of charge and is intended for parents and caregivers in groups of 10-45 attendees per session.

Following the training, all participants receive a training certificate and additional educational resources to further understand the signs of child abuse.

Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center is an organization committed to training youth, professionals, and parents to avoid, identify, and report child abuse. Founded in 1997, the organization provides a safe space for children to share their experiences of abuse. By working with local law enforcement and the Department of Family and Protective Services, the center offers coordinated services to families in need.

A representative from the organization said: “In our Center, we provide everything from forensic interviews to medical examinations, family advocacy, mental health counseling, and community education. We strive to reduce the emotional trauma for children and their non-offending family members throughout their journey with us. ”
