Prairie Health Launches Genetics-Driven Service for Anxiety and Depression in California

PALO ALTO, Calif. - November 24, 2020 - (Newswire.com)

The mental health crisis in the United States has taken center stage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prairie Health, a telehealth startup coming out of Stanford University, recently launched in California to improve the accessibility and efficacy of mental healthcare. Prairie gives California residents access to personalized medication, and is the first to enable care providers with data-driven tools like genetic testing for every person needing services.

Prairie launched this past summer. Founders Maurice Chiang, Aaron Kappe, Jin Woo Yu, and Benson Kung came together as Stanford graduates to make mental healthcare more effective using evidenced-based practices and advanced analytic techniques. The founding team’s passion for mental health innovation comes from a personal connection to the problem; Kung writes about his motivations for starting Prairie, noting: “as a computer scientist, Prairie means working together to bring data-driven insights to psychiatrists, to prevent, amongst other things, medication mismatches.”

Today, Prairie Health offers personalized and affordable care for people suffering from anxiety and depression. Common problems in mental healthcare include difficulty accessing a psychiatrist, long wait times, little follow-up, and improper medication and dosing. Prairie’s service addresses these issues through its patient-centric model. Members receive on-demand access to a dedicated care team, weekly check-ins with a care manager, and precision medicine tools like pharmacogenomics to guide treatment decisions.

Members get the best chance of having their symptoms of anxiety and depression reduced if not eliminated entirely. As compared to traditional care, Prairie’s care model promises that three times as many people will achieve remission in as little as three months; these improvements can be attributed to advances driven by genetics, machine learning, care management, and telepsychiatry.

Prairie is the first to offer depression and anxiety medication tailored to each individual through pharmacogenomic testing, which is made available to every member during their first month without additional charges. Genetic testing allows psychiatrists to make treatment decisions informed on a member’s metabolic profile -- oftentimes helping patients avoid the trial-and-error process of trying multiple medications before finding something that works.

With over 75% of Prairie members on medication for >6 weeks showing clinically significant improvements in symptoms of anxiety and depression, clients are very happy, with one review stating: “I found the medication that works best for my body, a psychiatrist that I feel actually cares and a care partner who checks in on me regularly and helps me with my goals!”

Adults looking for personalized mental healthcare can learn more about Prairie on its website or register for a free 15-minute consultation.

Prairie Health is also hiring roles in engineering, product, and care (Care Partners and psychiatrists). To learn more or to apply, please contact Prairie Health at inquiry@prairiehealth.co
