This September, Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco’s latest affordable homebuilding project is getting a boost from an energetic team of young people training to enter the building trades.
The group – aged between 18 and 24 – are helping to build six townhomes at Habitat’s Geneva Village site in Daly City. There they have already started the process of framing the homes.
These young people come from Success Centers, a nonprofit that provides comprehensive education, employment, and arts services to marginalized communities. Their novel construction program, funded by a YouthBuild federal grant, equips young people with valuable work skills. The partnership with Habitat unites them with a project that can benefit from their enthusiasm and from which they in turn can grow their talents and abilities.
Supervised every step of the way by Habitat’s professional on-site staff, the young builders are assigned work ahead of time and their days are carefully structured. Each one commits to 500 hours of work over the course of 20 weeks, working from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
