Stadtwerk Winterthur has announced sustainable heating solutions, converting waste energy from the city's incineration plant into hot water for 20 percent of homes. The system eliminates fossil fuel dependency while supporting Winterthur's ambitious 2040 net-zero emissions target.

-- Stadtwerk Winterthur has announced its sustainable heating solutions as part of the city's comprehensive energy transition strategy, offering solutions that replace fossil fuel systems and support Winterthur's ambitious climate protection objectives. This initiative provides residential properties, commercial enterprises, and public institutions with access to reliable and environmentally responsible heating alternatives.

The announcement aligns with Winterthur's voter-approved climate goals requiring net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, which the city's electorate endorsed in November 2021. The municipal energy plan, which came into force in January 2023, designates priority zones for district heating expansion and establishes a roadmap for transitioning away from natural gas.
The heating infrastructure transforms waste energy from the city's incineration plant—which processes 190,000 tonnes of refuse annually, generating electricity equivalent to 20% of Winterthur's total power consumption—into hot water distributed through an extensive pipeline network serving approximately 20% of Winterthur's total heating demand.
As a complement to this system, six neighborhood networks use wood chips from local forests for base load requirements, creating a diversified renewable energy portfolio.
Property owners can eliminate individual heating systems and connect directly to the centralized network for a dependable year-round heat supply. The system also eliminates fossil fuel backup requirements—a significant shift from previous operations that relied on gas or heating oil for peak demand periods.
"Our goal is to use waste heat from the incineration plant during summer months to meet heating demand, while wood provides support in winter," a company representative stated. "This approach saves important sustainable energy carriers for the colder winter months, and we can eliminate fossil fuel backup systems in the future."
Property owners can access financial support programs that assist with connection costs, and consultations are available to help residents identify suitable renewable heating options based on their location within designated municipal energy plan zones.
