The most recent update from the CDC’s Flu View Report for the 2024-2025 flu season contains a devastating statistic-- three additional reported deaths during weeks seven, nine and fifteen of 2025, brings the total number of pediatric deaths for last season to a record breaking 293.
Following a devastating flu season during 2003-2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began tracking the number of pediatric deaths. During the 2003-04 season, 153 children, including the children of the founders of Families Fighting Flu, died of the flu.
“This is an unacceptable record high,” said Michele Slafkosky, Executive Director Families Fighting Flu. “One death of a child from the flu is too many, and I fear going forward, with the lowered recommendation for the flu shot for children, the number of pediatric deaths will continue to rise unnecessarily. At Families Fighting Flu, we stand by the previous vaccine recommendation that everyone aged 6 months and older should receive an annual flu vaccine. Our families know far too well how the flu can devastate a family.”
Family members and survivors from across the U.S. are available for interviews about the impact that flu has had on their families and why vaccination is critical.
