Prodigy cellist and future dancer: Meet Aurelia Faidley-Solars

By: Get News

Today we are shining our spotlight on cello prodigy, Aurelia Faidley-Solars.  At just 13 years old, the young musician has accomplished more than some professionals, and she has quite the busy spring coming up!  Aurelia studies with cello pedagogue, Natasha Brofsky, at The Juilliard School.

At the end March, she will be the only student performing on a professional concert series, debuting an arrangement of Dvorak's beloved "Humoresque" that was created just for her.  A week later, she will perform a virtuosic piece by late Baroque composer, Carlos Tessarini with an orchestra at Merkin Concert Hall.  A few days later, she will record the Tessarini with an orchestra and have her second shot at the well-known Elgar Concerto with orchestra.

On April 23, Aurelia will have her second solo recital at Klavierhaus in New York City.  She will take this recital on the road on May 1 with a performance in Chattanooga, TN, and then over to Hilton Head, South Carolina for three recitals.  Last year, she was named "Young Artist of 2023" by Young Artists Performances in Hilton Head.  These solo recitals will feature works by Bach, William Grant Still, and the entire Elgar Concerto.

The Elgar Cello Concerto was not instantly a "hit", but it was brought into the spotlight by Jacqueline du Pre in 1962 when she was seventeen-years old.  Aurelia will no doubt channel her inner du Pre when performing this work of art.

Finally, in late May, Aurelia will return to Merkin Hall to perform the Elgar Concerto with an orchestra after winning the extremely competitive Hill International Concerto Competition.  When we asked Aurelia what she was most excited about, she instantly replied that she loves performing with orchestras the most.  "Hearing the sound produced from the orchestra is the most special feeling in the world.  The fourth movement of the Elgar has a short section where the cello section joins the soloist and it's magical."

This summer, Aurelia is very excited to attend Morningside Music Bridge, a full scholarship program based out of New England Conservatory.  "Morningside Music Bridge embodies the highest international standards of excellence, bringing together outstanding young musicians (violin, viola, cello, and piano) ages 12 -18. Participants engage in a month of intensive solo, chamber music, string orchestra training and performances."  Aurelia will be studying with renowned professors of the cello, including Lauren Lesser, Hans Jorgen Jensen, and Lluis Claret.

If you are able to catch Aurelia at any performance, she would love to say hello!  Follow her Instagram at @elliefaidley for more details.
