Macquarie Capital Equities appoints new US Head of Technology Research and expands coverage to healthcare services

  • Steve Koenig to lead technology research for the US; Tao Qiu joins as senior healthcare equity research analyst
  • Appointments complement existing coverage areas with a focus on technology-enabled services, including gaming and leisure, payments and digital commerce, lifestyle and media tech

Macquarie Capital Equities (Macquarie) today announced it has appointed Steve Koenig as Managing Director and US Head of Technology Research. Mr. Koenig will lead equities research efforts across the enterprise software and technology sectors in the US. Macquarie has also expanded its equities coverage to include healthcare services, naming Tao Qiu as senior healthcare equity research analyst.

Mr. Koenig has over 20 years’ experience as a sell-side equity research analyst covering enterprise software, having previously served as Managing Director at SMBC Nikko Securities America Inc. and Wedbush Securities, where he led enterprise software equity research. Most recently, Mr. Koenig was an independent consultant working with enterprise software companies to develop and execute impactful investor relations programs. Mr. Koenig began his career at Oracle and worked as a strategy and product marketing consultant to global technology and media companies before transitioning to equities research where he worked at firms including Jefferies, KeyBanc Capital Markets and Longbow Research. He has previously appeared on Bloomberg, CNBC and Fox Business and has been quoted in Reuters, Barron’s and Forbes discussing his research. Mr. Koenig earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Stanford University and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.

“Steve brings extensive industry, analytical and equity research experience, making him a valuable addition to our existing research team,” said Chad Beynon, US Director of Research and Head of Gaming and Leisure. “His strong knowledge and relationships across the enterprise software ecosystem will allow for unparalleled insight and access that our clients rely on. Technology is a highly relevant sector for our global and APAC client base, and we’re pleased to bring Steve’s perspective to that audience.”

Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Koenig said: “The technology sector continues to see advances across artificial intelligence, enterprise software and cybersecurity. I’m excited to join Macquarie’s equities research team and enhance its technology coverage to provide the meaningful investment insights that clients demand.”

Mr. Koenig’s appointment follows Macquarie’s expansion into healthcare services research, with the appointment of Tao Qiu as senior healthcare equity research analyst in May. Mr. Qiu brings nearly two decades of experience spanning equity research, direct investment and equity/multi-asset portfolio management. Prior to joining Macquarie, he was a senior analyst at Berenberg covering healthcare real estate and services providers. Before that, he worked at Stifel Nicolaus covering the same sectors. Mr. Qiu began his career at Columbia Management and previously served as managing director of global investment and strategies at Fosun Group in New York, leading cross-border M&A and public investments. He received his undergraduate degree from MIT and graduate degree from Boston University, and is a CFA® charter holder.

“The healthcare services provider industry is highly fragmented and in the process of significant consolidation,” said Mr. Qiu. “As healthcare services undergoes an evolution in its business landscape, I look forward to leading Macquarie’s coverage of the sector.”

The US equity research team provides global expertise, bringing deep, timely and independent insights to uncover issues and trends around core thematic sectors. In addition to healthcare services, the team covers gaming and leisure, media tech, software and technology services, lifestyle and digital payments.

“Our US equities research analysts are committed to delivering differentiated content to global buy-side institutions,” added Mr. Beynon. “Steve and Tao bring proven backgrounds in fundamental research, and we welcome them to our equities division.”
