A Case for Women Stepping Up to Help Women in the Hair Relaxer Lawsuit

New NIH Study Indicates Link Between Chemical Hair Relaxers and Uterine Cancer, Other Serious Health Problems

A Case for Women LLC, a mission-driven organization focused on educating women about civil legal action, is increasing its efforts to inform women about dangerous styling products and the hair relaxer lawsuit. By partnering with national law firms known for taking on large defendants, A Case for Women hopes to make high quality, contingency-fee based legal assistance accessible to women who used hair relaxer products and have been diagnosed with uterine cancer. There is no out-of-pocket cost to review a potential case.

A study released by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in October 2022 uncovered a dangerous reality: frequent use of chemical hair straighteners can increase the risk of uterine cancer by two to three times. According to the study, women who reported using hair straightening products were twice as likely to develop uterine cancer as those who did not. Additionally, the study noted that approximately 60% of participants self-identified as Black women. The study’s findings are consistent with prior reports that also show the same link between chemical hair straighteners and an increased risk of hormone-related cancers in women.

Black women tend to be at higher risk for uterine cancer related to hair relaxer products due to the heavy use and early adoption of hair relaxer products in the community. According to NBC News, approximately 95% of Black women report using chemical hair straightening products. Many of these women also report beginning use of the products in early childhood, sometimes as young as five or six years old and continuing regularly through adulthood.

“Women have struggled to conform to our society’s standards of beauty for generations, and it’s literally killing us,” said Susan Knape, president of A Case for Women. “Hair straighteners are another in a long line of unsafe products that have been marketed to women to make us feel better when in fact they can be fatal: talcum powder, Essure birth control, and now hair relaxers have all proven to be dangerous.”

There is also evidence to suggest that beauty companies, such as L’Oreal, specifically targeted Black women when marketing hair relaxer products.

While there are dozens of hair relaxer products available, sample products include:

  • African Pride
  • Africa's Best
  • Avlon Affirm
  • Creme of Nature
  • Dark and Lovely
  • Just for Me
  • Motions
  • Optimum
  • PinK
  • Precis
  • Revlon
  • Silk Elements
  • Soft & Beautiful
  • SoftSheen Carson
  • TCB Naturals

If you or a family member used chemical hair relaxers and have been diagnosed with uterine or ovarian cancer or had a hysterectomy related to fibroids, you may be able to pursue justice through a hair straightener lawsuit. Contact us now confidentially.

About A Case for Women

A Case for Women, founded in 2016, is the nation’s leader in advocacy for women who need, and qualify for, contingency-based legal services. It is our mission to educate women and their families about the opportunity to take legal action that not only provides compensation but also creates systemic change. We educate, advocate, and ultimately connect women with law firms that can represent them for no upfront fee. Since our inception, we have helped tens of thousands who have been injured by the actions of corrupt institutions and companies. This work has resulted in significant societal changes such as the dramatic shift in gymnastics coaching after the Larry Nassar MSU lawsuit, the implementation of rideshare safety protocols, the removal of Essure birth control from sale in the United States, and more.

Recently, A Case for Women launched a brother company to directly help men who have been harmed: A Case for Justice. Through A Case for Justice, we have helped men abused by Dr. Anderson, veterans hurt by toxic water at Camp Lejeune and American farmers suffering after exposure to the herbicide Paraquat.
