In that vein, he considered studying law but ultimately pursued accounting after analyzing job market trends early in his career. The decision set the foundation for a path defined by problem-solving, planning and analysis.
Dr. Matthew began his career as an assistant financial controller with Doctors Without Borders (MSF), followed by roles at Conoil PLC and MTN. He later worked as a manager of fixed assets at Etisalat Nigeria before immigrating to the United States. These experiences exposed him to gaps in how organizations manage assets. As a result, he chose that specialty as his career progressed.
Dr. Matthew later served as a principal consultant at Ukay Accountants. Between 2016 and 2021, he worked at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in Washington, D.C. In that capacity, he led a turnaround of the agency's asset management strategy within six months after years of difficulty.
Wealth Strategies for Middle Class Families
Beyond traditional consulting, Dr. Matthew's recent work focuses on financial education and wealth-building strategies for individuals and families. He entered this endeavor after observing the lack of practical financial education in the classroom. "I started searching for what other things I can do," he says. "So, I discovered that going into financial consulting allowed me to teach people about the rules of money."
"We go a long way in helping the middle class, the 95%," Dr. Matthew says. He describes financial services as a tool for broader community impact. In particular, there's an emphasis on strategies that employ wealth creation, increase cashflow, asset ownership and long-term financial planning.
"If I can help 100,000 families and show them how they can create an instant estate of $1 million each using index strategy (life insurance assets), I will transfer $100 billion into the community," Dr. Matthew says.
A Long-Term Vision for Wealth Creation
Dr. Matthew holds a doctorate in biblical studies from Newburgh Theological Seminary. He also has an MBA in international business management from Lagos State University and a higher national diploma in accounting and finance from the Federal Polytechnic, Bida. Additionally, he is affiliated with professional organizations, including the Institute of Management Consultants USA and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
As someone who works to stay abreast of industry developments, Dr. Matthew follows how artificial intelligence is influencing the finance and consulting sector. He compares the rise of AI to earlier technological shifts that transformed the accounting field. "In those days in accounting, we used to do the journal spreadsheet by hand," he says. "When the computer came out, it became a game-changer." At the moment, he is studying AI to better understand how it works.
Looking ahead, Dr. Matthew's long-term goal is centered on scale and impact. He aims to help create 100,000 millionaires and train a new generation of consultants focused on asset-based wealth creation. That is the vision for 2030.
