About David Slagle

Inspired to follow in the footsteps of his role model, his sister, Mr. Slagle began his career as an educator. He first taught in Washington, D.C., before moving to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, which was close to where he grew up. Mr. Slagle loved teaching and everything about it, from his students to the administration.

After some time, Mr. Slagle became frustrated with the education system. Upon examining his future professional aspirations, he realized he wanted more than just a job; he wanted to excel, but the system was preventing him from doing so. A friend informed him of an opening at ADP at the entry level for selling insurance. Mr. Slagle discussed his desire to change careers with his family, who were fully supportive because they wanted him to enjoy his work.

Mr. Slagle was confident that his work ethic and the skills he gained in college would benefit any leadership role he took on in the corporate world. He successfully interviewed and got the job at ADP, starting a new career path.

When discussing his change in careers, Mr. Slagle says, "If you have a goal or a chance to do it, I'm an example that you can."

In his current role at Minitab LLC, Mr. Slagle is in charge of business development.

Mr. Slagle is currently in charge of business development at Minitab LLC. Before this role, he was also in business development, specifically outbound, where he helped increase the number of representatives in the U.S. and India from roughly 18 to 60 at Avalara. Minitab hoped that he would replicate that success when he joined the company. So far, he has grown the number of representatives from five to 12. He has now taken over the European division and aspires to expand the number of representatives by the end of the year.

Creating a Supportive Environment

During his career, Mr. Slagle has learned the importance of taking an interest in his team and being supportive of their career advancements. He prides himself on taking the time to get to know them. He not only communicates with them about their work, but also about their lives outside of the job.

"That's helped me build strong high-trust within my team. I think a team culture can make or break a sales leader. A close friend of mine at Avalara used to call it, ‘You want a got-your-back culture, not a watch-your-back culture.' If someone is struggling, my team wants to reach out and help them. If someone is successful, they're asking, ‘What are you doing right?' It's being able to collaborate, because it's not just me running the ship. I'm not above anyone; no one's below me. We're all in it together," Mr. Slagle says.

Regarding the problems in the industry, Mr. Slagle says that many companies struggle with proper data collection, organization and analysis. He believes that Minitab's' suite of products can help customers around the world leverage the power of data analysis to gain insights and make a significant impact on their organizations.
