A new book offers a radical perspective on using trauma as a catalyst for transformative growth

“Out of the Cocoon: The Journey to Becoming” by Rosemary Esehagu was released on February 15, 2025. This 144-page book combines memoir and poetry in an intimate exploration of painful experiences in the author’s life and ways that trauma can be a stepping stone toward discovering personal greatness.

Esehagu, who was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, and immigrated to New York City at the age of sixteen, is a practicing physician, storyteller, advocate, and self-described “paradoxical chameleon.” Through her own experiences as an immigrant and woman of color, as well as the traumas relayed by the patients she treats as a medical doctor, Rosemary has developed a unique perspective on adversity.

Her creative work exudes resilience and a deeply reflective attitude toward finding lessons in life’s most difficult moments. She reminds readers that traumatic experiences can be powerful catalysts for growth but must first be acknowledged and processed to unlock their transformative power. Through both memoir and poetry, Esehagu offers guidance for developing self-love, embracing change, and finding a sense of wholeness.

With vulnerable, touching works that span racism, sexism, abuse, mental health, love, and beyond, this inspiring book aims to help others contending with pain and traumatic experiences, offering a guiding light for healing and becoming the best version of yourself.

The author will hold a book launch party at the Houston Museum of Natural Science on March 22, 2025, which includes a visit to the museum’s Cockrell Butterfly Center.

From the back cover:

How would you live your life if you understood that every scar, trauma, or suffering can make you stronger and greater?Rosemary Esehagu, who has studied psychology and medicine, has seen the damaging effects of having people’s abuse or trauma speak for them. In her memoir, Out of the Cocoon: The Journey to Becoming, she shares her story of posttraumatic growth and offers a radical perspective on abuse. Despite encountering abuse as a child and racism and trauma when she immigrated to the US as a teenager, she has found her place and is living her purpose. She uses prose and poetry to express that we can overpower and repurpose others’ harmful actions. There is a better way of living after trauma…
