From the back cover:

“A highly satisfying techno-thriller asking the grim ‘What if?’ of loose nukes slipping from the grasp of a dying Soviet Union and unleased in the West. This is no run-of-the-mill potboiler. Meslin’s 30+ years of experience shows; he knows his stuff.” - Thom Shanker, former Pentagon Correspondence, The New York Times

In late-summer 1991 the Soviet Union is slowly crumbling. Amid a violent uprising in the Soviet Republic of Moldavia, a portable nuclear weapon is stolen from a secure armory by nationalists seeking to blackmail the Kremlin. When the ultimate location of the device is revealed, the threat risks drawing NATO and the United States into a nuclear conflagration beyond anyone’s control.

A classified U.S. Nuclear Emergency Search Team is deployed to locate the weapon, as a legendary Mossad agent and a tenacious KGB investigator each uncover evidence pointing to a complex – and seemingly contradictory – international conspiracy. The true nature of the nuclear threat emerges only gradually, amid a sophisticated campaign of political deception aided by a seductive Soviet sleeper agent.

Inspired by actual events, the gripping tale races between Moscow, Moldavia, Paris, Washington, the skies over Eastern Europe, and geostationary orbit 22,000 miles above the Earth. The final hours to the climax are a riveting blur of geopolitical brinksmanship that can change the course of history – or possibly end it.

“Every U.S. citizen would be wise to read this compelling story as a reminder of how close we are to nuclear catastrophe.” - Evelyn Farkas, Executive Director, McCain Institute; former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine & Eurasia
