Mylan Responds to Icahn Preliminary Proxy Filing

PITTSBURGH, PA – October 15, 2004 — In response to the preliminary proxy statement filed yesterday by Carl Icahn, Mylan Laboratories Inc. (NYSE: MYL) Vice Chairman and CEO, Robert J. Coury, stated: “Mr. Icahn’s anticipated proxy filing includes no new substantive information. This is not surprising in light of his admitted lack of knowledge of our industry, our company and King. The only surprise is Mr. Icahn’s belated revelation of his short position in King stock, which we believe puts his economic interests in direct conflict with other Mylan shareholders.

“We are confident that Mylan shareholders will reject Mr. Icahn’s rhetoric and focus on the business and economic fundamentals of the King transaction. Following the November 1st announcement of financial guidance on a prospective basis for the combined company, investors will be able to weigh all of the information presented to them, and we believe they will recognize that the King transaction is in their own best interests.”

Mylan also reported today that it is submitting an additional detailed response letter to UBS from Mylan’s Vice Chairman and CEO. A copy of that letter will be available at www.sec.gov.
