Item 7.01. Regulation FD Disclosure.
On May 27, 2010, Consumers Energy Company (Consumers Energy), the principal subsidiary of CMS
Energy Corporation (CMS Energy), announced that it is deferring the development of the
830-megawatt clean coal power plant that it planned to have in operation in 2017, because of
reduced customer demand for electricity due to the recession, forecasted lower natural gas prices
due to recent developments in shale gas recovery technology, and projected surplus generating
capacity in the Midwest market.
A CMS Energy News Release making this announcement is attached as Exhibit 99.1.
CMS Energy will provide an update on Consumers Energys Balanced Energy Initiative on Thursday, May
27, 2010, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. EDT. A copy of the CMS Energy presentation is furnished as
Exhibit 99.2 to this report. A webcast of the presentation will be available on the CMS Energy
website, www.cmsenergy.com.
